Modified haptic toric IOL achieves improved rotational stability

Posted on

A novel toric lens with a modified haptic design demonstrates excellent rotational stability in the early postoperative period, according to a study presented at AAO 2020 Virtual.

The study evaluated early postoperative rotational stability of a toric IOL with a modified haptic design (ZCU150 to ZCU600; TECNIS Toric II) both subjectively and objectively in 2 prospective post-market studies. Surgeon input on overall performance, rotational stability, and uncorrected distance vision (UDVA) was obtained with a subjective questionnaire. Photographs obtained at the operative and postoperative visits were used to evaluate IOL axis alignment. Two independent masked analysts analyzed stability to determine any change in lens alignment.

Interim data from the subjective evaluation in 35 eyes at 1 week demonstrated that surgeons were satisfied with rotational stability in 100% of eyes, and UDVA (20/30 or better in 97% of eyes), and overall clinical outcomes. Improved rotational stability and low residual refractive astigmatism were observed. Objective evaluation from a previous trial with the same haptic design demonstrated absolute mean rotation of 0.71 ± 0.69°. The overall clinical outcomes from both the subjective and objective post-market studies confirm excellent rotational stability and overall clinical outcomes.
